“Sir Bertrand, A Fragment”
Anna Laetitia Barbauld, née Aikin, 1773
Study by Manuel Aguirre & Eva Ardoy

One of the earliest texts in the genre, Barbauld’s story stands at the crossroads between medieval romance, fairytale and Gothic fiction, and constitutes a perfect example of the interface between canonical literature, popular culture and folklore. The study proposes some formal keys towards understanding the story and its seminal role in the development of Gothic prose.
